The Parenting Styles
67There are three parenting styles. These determine what type of parent you are and how your children might end up like. I, myself was a child of an authoritarian parent. I learned the hard way and was punished harshly for my mistakes. I always wonder what type of parent I am going to be and hopefully I’ll be an authoritative parent.
Authoritarian parenting- parenting that emphasizes control and unquestioning obedience. I believe is like old school parenting. The parents make their child conform to a set standard of conduct and punish them forcefully for violating it. In return the child is more discontented, withdrawn, and distrustful.
Permissive parenting- emphasizes self expression and self regulation. They rarely punish them, and allow the children to have freedom. They are warm, non controlling, and undemanding toward their children. Their preschool children tend to be immature- the least self-controlled and the least exploratory.
Authoritative parenting- emphasizes a child’s individuality but also stresses social constraints. They strongly guide their children but also respect the children’s independent decisions, interests, opinions and personalities. They are firm and demand good behavior while still being an accepting and loving parent. Their children tend to be self-controlled, self-reliant, self-assertive, exploratory and content.
What type of parenting style do you use? Or when you are a parent which one do you think you will be?
